High Energy and Low-Cost Membrane-Free Chlorine Flow Battery

Grid-scale energy storage is essential for reliable electricity transmission and renewable integration. Redox flow batteries (RFB) provide affordable scalable strategies stationary storage. But most of the current RFB chemistries are based on expensive transition metal ions or synthetic organics. Here, we report a reversible Cl 2 /Cl - redox battery through electrolysis aqueous NaCl electrolyte, as-produced stored extracted using carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) mineral spirit flow. The immiscibility between CCl electrolyte enables membrane-free design with efficiency >91 % density 125.7 Wh/L. With inherently low cost active materials (~5 $/kWh) highly reaction , chlorine leaves significant space to meet stringent price reliability target Figure 1
